Essay that won the first prize in the school essay competition held on Independence Day.
Students play an indispensable role in building up the nation. The students of today are the administrators of tomorrow. It is on these that the nation cherishes its future hope. Students are a part and parcel of society. They live and develop in Society. Just as the Students expect love and sympathy from the members of society, they in turn should render similar help and service to society.
Students and social services go side by side. Social development is possible to a large extent through social service itself. There are various means available for students to help and conduct social service. Students should make a determined effort to develop India by such means.
India is a country of villages. Development in these rural areas is the first and foremost problem that we should think of. Camps can be conducted in the undeveloped areas, they can undertake projects like digging wells and canals, constructing and repairing roads, seeing to the cleanliness of the villages and other works which require manual labour. Thay can also give guidance to the uneducated in modern ways of cultivation and the value of good health. The villagers should be made conscious of their responsibility in building the nation. Clubs in urban schools and in other educational institutions can adopt village schools and co-curricular activities. Our UNESCO club helping the school in Ranipur serves as a very good example of such help. Such an activity inspires a person; both the masses and the students benefit immensely from it. First aid training would very well help the students in helping themselves and their neighbors.
Students have vitality, energy and adventure in them. When floods or famine cause havoc in certain areas, students should rush to help them. While collecting funds, clothes and foodstuffs, students as a body should keep in mind that unity among them is quite essential. Even during emergencies and in times of war students are of great help to the nation.
Students should keep in mind that serving the needy in villages will surely give greater satisfaction than serving the fashionable and comfortable in the cities. Thus, if the educated are equally distributed in all ‘areas every village will develop, and the country will turn into a paradise. Thus, our country can avoid the Brain Drain’.
The work that the students are doing or at least the ideals of social reform in the present period is unique and marvelous. As a matter of fact, they are the life-breath of society. The students have helped the Government in ways more than one. Their role in India’s development is unforgettable. We the students pray God to give us the strength, unity and efficiency in our studies and in our efforts to make Indian society a model one successful.
